About
I love candles and began making them a few years ago - now I'm trying my hand at making a micro business here in Combrook in beautiful South Warwickshire.
Max the life of your candle: To maximise the life of your candle, burn for around 4 hours the first time you light it, making sure the wax melts fully across the full surface of the candle. After this, shorter burns are fine. Do not burn for longer than 4 hours. Trim the wick to 5mm before lighting the candle every time. South
Imperfections: Coconut and rapeseed wax can be sensitive to changes in the air temperature; it can behave differently from paraffin and even soy wax. Sometimes, an imperfection such as a crack or small crater forms as the candle cures. Please see these imperfections for what they are: a product of natural ingredients and a hand-poured process! They don't affect the burn or the scent throw of your candle.
Sustainability: It's been challenging to interrogate the sustainability pledges of every supplier to the point of tracing all ingredients right back to their source, but I'm happy to share what I have learned so far. Your candle is made of:
Wax: Rapeseed and coconut natural wax blend, made from renewable and biodegradable rapeseed oil and coconut oil and nothing else. It is free from paraffin, soy, palm, beeswax and synthetic additives. The wax is blended in Europe for a UK supplier.
Why not soy? Soy wax is cheaper and more widely available, but demand for soy is a major driver of rainforest clearing. Coconut and rapeseed are crops that are not linked to deforestation, unlike soy. Furthermore, coconut wax is often made from leftover coconut oil after food production, and coconuts grow on trees that produce the fruit for decades, so they require less replanting than soy. Rapeseed (canola) is widely grown in temperate climates like the UK and EU, reducing transport emissions (unfortunately that is not true of coconut, of course), and its flowers provide food for bees and other pollinators.
Fragrance oil: All fragrance oils used are paraben-free, cruelty-free and vegan.
Wick: The wick is made from unbleached cotton with an interwoven linen thread.
Jar: Sprayed glass made in Italy for a UK supplier. After your candle is finished your jar can become a plant pot, a pen pot, a tea-light jar, a treat jar... or use it to make your own candle! Thanks to its low melting point, rapeseed and coconut wax is easy to clean off. Use a metal spatula or blunt knife to scrape out the remaining wax and lever out the wick. Then rinse your jar under hot water from the tap and clean with a cloth.
Coaster cap: The cap is a handy coaster to protect your surface from heat. It also helps keep your candle clean of dust and preserves its scent when not in use. Even with infrequent burns, your candle will retain its fragrance over many months. The cap is made from FSC®-certified MDF with oak veneer sourced from European Oak for a UK supplier.
Packaging: Recyclable, plastic-free box made from FSC®-certified paper and honeycomb-structured protection sleeve made from 85% recycled paper pulp and FSC®-certified paper.
Candle safety: Always burn on a level, heat-proof surface and away from anything that could catch fire. Never leave a candle burning unattended or move it whilst lit. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time. Always trim the wick to 5mm before lighting.
